Wildcats Head South to Dance With Devils

Oct. 3, 2003

EVANSTON, Ill. - It is said that all good things must come to an end. For Northwestern's men's soccer team, that statement is often true. The Wildcats headed into the weekend with a five-game unbeaten streak, the longest stretch since the 'Cats went 8-0-0 in 1988.

However, 15th-ranked Penn State put an end to the joy ride, downing NU 3-1 in University Park, Thursday night.

Northwestern, who fell back to the .500-mark with its setback against Penn State, now looks to start the streak-building over as they head down the Atlantic Coast to face Duke Sunday.

Freshman Gerardo Alvarez will look to regenerate some of the offense he has put together thus far in the season. Penn State's defense focused heavily on not letting Alvarez out of their sight, holding him to his first scoreless match since the Wildcats' 2-1 victory over DePaul back on Sept. 14.

Duke comes into the match on the heels of a 2-0 loss to Davidson. The Blue Devils are 2-7-1 on the season.
