EVANSTON, Ill. - After dropping the first two matches of the season to Kansas and Mizzouri and being out scored by a combined count of 6-1, the Northwestern women's soccer team was looking to ignite its attack in the first match of the 2003 Wildcat Classic against Florida Atlantic.
They had to wait more than 106 minutes to do it, but the Wildcats finally broke through for victory when the freshman combination of Shannon Schneeman and Katie Wright struck.
Wright received a ball from the right side in the goalmouth, and made a nice feed back to Schneeman, who fired a 20-yard shot that beat FAU goalkeeper Molly Keating to her right and punctured the back of the net. It was Schneeman's first collegiate goal, Wright's first collegiate point, and NU's first win of 2003.
Perhaps more amazingly, it was Northwestern's first overtime victory since the 2001 season. Last year, the Wildcats played a staggering six OT games, tying five times and dropping the season finale in extra time.
In a match where neither team was able to muster a standout chance, the late goal may have given NU a just victory. The Wildcats outshot FAU 15-6, and NU freshman goalkeeper Whitney Jones was not forced to make a save on the day as she posted her first collegiate shutout. At the other end, Keating made four saves but was tested only a few times.
In game two of Friday's Wildcat Classic action, Ohio knocked off Minnesota, 3-1. Tiffany Horvath paced the Bobcats with two goals in the match, including the match-winner in the 31st minute. Christel Schiering added a goal and an assist as the Bobcats improved to 1-2-0 on the season. Minnesota, which got a goal from freshman Haley Lentsch -- her third in as many collegiate games -- fell to 1-1-1.
The Wildcat Classic continues Sunday at the Thomas Sports Complex. Minnesota and Florida Atlantic will kick things off at noon, while Northwestern will square off with Ohio at approximately 3 p.m.
