EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern University has named its Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for the Week of May 12-18. The men's winner is golf's Bjorn Widerstedt (Vasteras, Sweden/Carlforsska Gymnasiet), while the women's recipient is Lauren Schwendimann (Tustin, Calif./Foothill) of the softball team.
Widerstedt, a senior, concluded his Northwestern golf career with a solid performance at the NCAA Central Regional Championships, placing 14th among the 141 competitors in the tournament field. Widerstedt shot rounds of 69, 73 and 71 for the three days and posted pars or birdies on 45 of his 54 holes.
Widerstedt is one of five finalists for the prestigious Byron Nelson Award, a national award which is presented to the top Division I golfer based upon academics, athletics and community service.
Schwendimann, a senior pitcher, concluded her Wildcat career with a stellar pitching performance Friday at the NCAA Regionals in Austin, Texas. She pitched the 5.1 innings of shutout relief against Southwest Texas, allowing just two hits while striking out six. At the plate, she recorded two hits, including a double, and scored a run.
Just an hour later, Schwendimann earned the start against Hawai'i, hurling all 10.2 innings. She scattered seven hits while striking out another six.
