Northwestern announced the winners of the Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week. The male recipient is Dan Brauer (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) of the baseball team, and the female honoree is Cindy Muran (Newbury Park, Calif./Newbury Park) of the softball team. Both student-athletes were recognized for their athletic performance from the week of May 5-12.
Brauer pitched his third complete game in a row, as NU scored five runs in the top of the eighth inning to beat Michigan 8-3 in Saturday's second game. In the longest outing of his young career, Brauer allowed just two singles after the second inning, to improve his record to 5-2. The left-hander struck out three and upped his season strikeout total to 43 in 50.1 innings. With 11 appearances and six starts, Brauer is second on the team with a 2.68 ERA.
Muran hit .478 and set a Big Ten Tournament record with 11 hits in helping lead Northwestern to the Big Ten Tournament championship game last weekend. Muran went 11-for-23 with two doubles and three RBI. She recorded all three RBI in a victory over 14th-ranked Michigan, including a decisive two-run double in the top of the 12th inning. Her 34 RBI this season rank as the fourth-highest single-season total in school history.
