Northwestern Falls to Kansas State in First Round of NCAA Championships, 4-1

May 10, 2003

EVANSTON, Ill. - Despite dropping the doubles point, Kansas State posted four straight singles wins against Northwestern to secure a 4-1 win Saturday in the first round of the 2003 NCAA Championships. Petra Sedlmajerova clinched the match for KSU, rallying for a 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles.

KSU got on the board as Jessica Simosa cruised to a 6-4, 6-1 win against NU's Andrea Yung. Simosa fell behind 3-0 in the first set but took six of the last seven games to win the set and put her ahead for good.

Andrea Cooper gave Kansas State a 2-1 lead with a win at No. 5. After falling behind a break in the second set to Kristi Roemer, Cooper forced a tiebreaker and prevailed for a 6-1, 7-6 (3) win.

NU's Stacy Kokx appeared to have control of the No. 4 match, jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the first set. However, Hayley McIvor took over from there, reeling off the next seven games to take a one-set lead. McIvor used the momentum in the second set--winning by the same 7-5 margin--to give her the win.

NU took a 1-0 lead, winning the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches with ease. Connie Chiang and Yung dropped McIvor and Cooper, 8-6, and Jamie Peisel and Kokx defeated Maria Rosenberg and Simosa, 8-4.

Kansas State will face Virginia Commonwealth Sunday at noon Central time at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center.
