EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern University has named its Hilton Garden Inn Athlete of the Week recipients for the week of April 28-May 4. The women's recipient is softball's Carri Leto (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla), while the men's winner is Tom Johnson (Sacramento, Calif./Del Campo) of the golf team.
Leto, a junior second baseman, went 5-for-7 from the leadoff spot as Northwestern clinched a Big Ten Tournament berth with a two-game sweep of No. 24 Illinois. Leto recorded three hits, including an RBI double, in the Wildcats' 6-0 win Saturday.
She added two more hits in NU's 2-1 victory Sunday. The five-hit weekend raised her overall season batting average 19 points and her Big Ten average 49 points. The 'Cats will be making their first conference tournament appearance since 2000.
For her efforts, she was also named Big Ten Co-Player of the Week along with Michigan State's Sandy Lewis.
Johnson, a junior, captured All-Big Ten Championship honors after placing second at this weekend's Big Ten Championships in Bloomington, Ind. Johnson finished 7-under (277) for the tournament, one stroke behind Minnesota's Matt Anderson, the tourney's medalist.
For the tournament, Johnson shot par or better on 65 of the 72 holes. He finished with 15 birdies. Johnson also was one of six student-athletes named to the All-Big Ten first team. In 10 events this year, Johnson has finished in the top 10 six times.
