BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Junior Tom Johnson (Sacramento, Calif./Del Campo) is challenging for the Big Ten Championships individual crown, but he will need some help from his teammates the next two days if Northwestern is to make a run at its fourth league title in five years.

Johnson fired a 3-under 68 for the first 18 holes and shared the lead with Ohio State's David Bieterman and Michigan State's Casey Lubahn. In the second round, Johnson finished 1-over and is now tied for fourth place, three strokes (68-72=140) behind Purdue's Pete Karmis.

As a team, the Wildcats are 14-over (286-296=582), 19 strokes behind first-day leader Illinois. Northwestern was 2-over for the first 18 holes before shooting 12-over for Friday's final 18.

Senior Bjorn Widerstedt (Vasteras, Sweden/Carlforsska Gymnasiet), who on Friday was named one of five finalists for the GCAA's Byron Nelson Award, is tied for 19th place with a 3-over 145 (71-74). Junior T.C. Ford (Covington, La./Mandeville) is in 34th place at 6-over (73-75=148).

Senior Scott Harrington (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) and junior Casey Strunk (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird) are both in 40th place at 8-over.

The third round begins at 9 a.m. CST Saturday. Live Stats are available for the tournament by linking to 2003 Big Ten Men's Championships.
