IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Northwestern saved its best for last, shooting its top two rounds of the season on Saturday and Sunday to finish third at the 22nd Annual Big Ten Championships at the Finkbine Golf Course. The Wildcats were tied for 10th place after Friday's first two rounds.
Led by senior Elizabeth Burden (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) and sophomore Ina Kim (Encino, Calif./Harvard-Westlake), NU charged toward the top of the team leaderboard and finished 62-over (319-314-297-300=1,230), just seven strokes behind second-place Wisconsin. Ohio State captured its second straight conference title, posting a 26-over 1,194.
On Saturday, Kim posted the third round's best score -- a Big Ten Championship record-tying 70 -- and on Sunday, Burden shared fourth-round medalist honors (1-under 72) with Ohio State's Jennifer Selfinger. Burden, who was named a second-team All-Big Ten Conference selection this weekend, finished with 13 pars, a birdie, two bogeys and an eagle on the par-5 No. 18 on Sunday. She finished 9-over and tied for seventh place after the four rounds (76-80-73-72=301).
Kim finished in a ninth-place tie at 10-over (78-77-70-77=302).
Junior Lauren Grzebien (Saunderstown, R.I./Narragansett) also turned in one of the day's top rounds. She fired an even-par 73 and moved up to 37th place (84-82-78-73=317). Her younger sister, Mary Ellen Grzebien, placed 26th at 21-over (81-78-76-78=313).
NU's second sister tandem, Erin Breslin and Kerri Breslin (Portland, Ore./Lincoln), carded rounds of 84 and 85 on Sunday and finished 54th and 61st, respectively.
Indiana's Karen Dennison and Ohio State's Allison Hanna shared the individual medalist honors.
