IOWA CITY, Iowa -- On a perfect day for golf, Northwestern sophomore Ina Kim (Encino, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) took advantage of the conditions and tied a Big Ten Championship third-round record Saturday by firing a 3-under 70 to move into a sixth-place tie in the individual race.

Led by Kim, it was also a good day for the Wildcat team, which fired a 5-over 297, the third-best team score of the tournament and the 'Cats' best team score of the year. With its strong showing, Northwestern moved into eighth place, and is only eight strokes behind third-place Indiana. Ohio State, which fired a 3-over 295 on Saturday, leads the field by 16 strokes over second-place Wisconsin.

Kim's 70 was the best 18-hole score of her collegiate career. She finished the day with four birdies, 13 pars and just one bogey. Kim became the fourth player in this year's tournament to shoot a 3-under 70 for a single round. She is now 6-over (78-77-70=225) through 54 holes. The only other Big Ten player to shoot a 70 in the tournament's third round was Ohio State's Cheryl Stacy in 1984.

Northwestern also received a solid effort Saturday from senior Elizabeth Burden (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest), who shot an even-par 73. She is now in 13th place at 10-over (76-80-73=229).

Sophomore Mary Ellen Grzebien (Saunderstown, R.I./Narragansett) climbed five spots to 25th with a 3-over 76 in the third round. She is now 16-over (81-78-76=235). Senior Erin Breslin (Portland, Ore./Lincoln) and junior Lauren Grzebien (Saunderstown, R.I./Narragansett) are in 49th and 52nd place, respectively.

The final round begins Sunday morning. Live Stats are available for the tournament by linking to 2003 Big Ten Women's Championships.
