EVANSTON, Ill. -- Offensive linemen Austin King (Cincinnati, Ohio/Purcell Marian) and Jeff Roehl (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) lead the list of Northwestern football players who could hear their names called this weekend when the National Football League holds its 68th Annual Draft in New York.
ESPN and ESPN2 will televise the Draft. Check local listings for air time.
King and Roehl were staples on an offensive line that helped NU rank first and second in Big Ten total offense in 2000 and 2001, respectively. The Wildcats led the Big Ten in scoring in 2000.
King was a four-year starting center for the Wildcats and an honorable mention All-Big Ten selection. Roehl, who played primarily guard for the 'Cats, started at Northwestern for three straight years after transferring from Notre Dame and also earned honorable mention All-Big Ten kudos.
Northwestern has two additional players who could land free-agent contracts: cornerback Raheem Covington (Pine Hill, N.J./Overbrook) and place-kicker David Wasielewski (Odessa, Fla./Jesuit).
Last year, Napoleon Harris (Oakland Raiders), Kevin Bentley (Cleveland Browns) and Sam Simmons (Miami Dolphins) heard their names called during NFL Draft weekend. Harris became NU's seventh first-round pick, while Bentley and Simmons went in the fourth and fifth rounds, respectively. An additional six players, including Damien Anderson and Zak Kustok, signed free-agent contracts.
