COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Northwestern, ranked 20th in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin index and 21st in the latest coaches' poll, turned in the fourth-best team score Sunday at the 34th Annual Robert Kepler Intercollegiate and finished in a seventh-place tie with Purdue. Ohio State, the host school, won the event, finishing 16 strokes ahead of the 'Cats.
The Wildcats were the highest ranked team in the 18-team field, but were playing without their top golfer, junior Tom Johnson (Sacramento, Calif./Del Campo), who was suspended for one tournament for a violation of team rules.
Senior Scott Harrington (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) finished the tournament with back-to-back 73's and concluded the three rounds at 8-over (78-73-73=224) for 13th place.
Junior Casey Strunk (Phoenix, Ariz/Thunderbird) fired a 1-over 73 to finish in a 30th-place tie (78-79-73=230) with teammate Bjorn Widerstedt (Vasteras, Sweden/Carlforsska Gymnasiet). Widerstedt carded rounds of 75, 78 and 77.
Freshman Bryson Young (Reno, Nev./Galena) and junior T.C. Ford (Covington, La./Mandeville) rounded out the NU lineup. Young and Ford finished 36th and 43rd, respectively.
Northwestern returns to action in two weeks, participating in the Fossum Spartan Intercollegiate in East Lansing, Mich.
