Wildcats in Ninth Place at 34th Annual Kepler Invitational

April 12, 2003

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Northwestern, the highest nationally ranked (#20) team in this year's 18-team Kepler Invitational, is in ninth place after playing two rounds at Ohio State's Scarlet Course, which hosted last year's NCAA national championships.

The Wildcats are playing the tournament without their top golfer, junior Tom Johnson (Sacramento, Calif./Del Campo), who was suspended for one event for a violation of a team rule.

After firing a 1-over 73 in the second round, senior Scott Harrington (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) is in 21st place (78-73=151) at 7-over, which leads the NU contingent. Senior Bjorn Widerstedt (Vasteras, Sweden/Carlforsska Gymnasiet) and junior T.C. Ford (Covington, La./Mandeville) are tied for 30th place at 9-over. Widerstedt, who is coming off sixth- and fourth-place finishes in his last two tournaments, had rounds of 75 and 78, while Ford turned in scores of 79 and 74.

The Buckeyes, ranked 74th in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin index, own a nine-stroke cushion over Indiana and 10-stroke lead over Illinois and Toledo.

The third and final round begins at 8 a.m. EDT Sunday.
