EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern University has named its Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for the week of March 31-April 6. The men's recipient is J.A. Happ (Peru, Ill./St. Bede Academy) of the baseball team, while the women's winner is softball's Lauren Schwendimann (Tustin, Calif./Foothill).

Happ, a sophomore left-hander, threw a complete-game, two-hit shutout Sunday afternoon, blanking Michigan State 2-0 in East Lansing, Mich. Happ needed just 87 pitches to pick up the win in the second game of Sunday's twinbill.

Happ improved to 4-2 on the season and lowered his overall ERA to 2.85. He struck out eight Spartans in the game, and has totaled 42 Ks in 41 innings pitched in seven starts. It is the third time this season Happ has allowed only two hits in a game.

In his 41 innings of work, Happ has given up just 33 hits, including limiting MSU to a 2-for-23 performance (.087) Sunday. For the season, opposing teams are batting .224 against Happ.

Schwendimann, a senior, picked up two Big Ten wins last week for the Wildcats and posted a perfect 0.00 ERA in three appearances. In 15.1 innings pitched, she struck out 10 and walked only one. Schwendimann limited opposing batters to just six hits in 52 at-bats for a .115 batting average.

With NU trailing Ohio State 2-0 in the first inning Saturday, she entered the game and allowed two hits over the final 6 2/3 innings as NU rallied for a 5-2 win. The following day against Penn State, Schwendimann pitched a three-hitter as the 'Cats posted a 4-0 victory. She helped her own cause by going 2-for-3 at the plate, including a home run.
