Bjorn Widerstedt Earns Big Ten Player-of-the-Week Honors

March 27, 2003

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Senior Bjorn Widerstedt (Vasteras, Sweden/Carlforsska Gymnasiet) has earned his first Big Ten player-of-the-week honor after finishing fourth earlier this week at the Oregon Duck Invitational. He shared the award with Wisconsin's Joel Rechlicz.

Widerstedt, who carded a 6-under 210 (66-74-70) at the tournament, has finished as Northwestern's medalist in the Wildcats' last three events. Widerstedt now has six top-20 finishes in eight tournaments this year, including three top-10 showings. He is shooting 10-under for his last six rounds of golf. In two of those rounds Widerstedt recorded a 6-under 66.

With his strong play of late, Widerstedt has lowered his 18-hole stroke average to 72.38. In the latest Golfweek/Sagarin index, he was ranked 83rd nationally. That ranking is expected to improve, however, as the index was computed prior to the Oregon tournament.
