Wildcats Enjoy Better Second Day; Place 13th at Texas A&M MoMorial

March 4, 2003

CYPRESS, Texas -- Just as Northwestern started climbing the standings at Texas A&M's Verizon "Mo"Morial, the tournament ended, leaving the Wildcats with a 13th-place finish among the 19 entrants. The annual tourney was shortened to 36 holes after rain forced the suspension of much of Monday's play.

Like the weather, Northwestern's play drastically improved on Tuesday, with four of the five Wildcats shooting 79 or better. The only Wildcat who failed to finish in the 70s was sophomore Mary Ellen Grzebien (Saunderstown, R.I./Narragansett), who shot an 80, but still finished as NU's medalist with a 13-over 157 (77-80). She placed 28th overall, which quickly helped erase the memories of last week's 75th-place showing at the Central District Classic.

Senior Elizabeth Burden (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) fired a 4-over 76 in the second round to finish 14-over (82-76=158) and in 32nd place. Sophomore Ina Kim (Encino, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) placed 40th at 16-over (82-78=160). Mary Ellen's older sister, Lauren Grzebien (Saunderstown, R.I./Narragansett), led NU in the final 18 holes, shooting a 3-over 75 to place 49th (86-75=161).

Senior Erin Breslin (Portland, Ore./Lincoln) improved her second round by 10 strokes (89-79=168) and placed 78th.

Baylor won the tournament, finishing at 34-over, seven strokes ahead of second-place Arkansas.
