EVANSTON, Ill. - Courtney Flynn, a sophomore attacker for the Northwestern women's lacrosse team, was tabbed by Inside Lacrosse as an honorable mention selection for National Player of the Week.
Flynn was recognized for her effort this weekend as she led the Wildcats to season-opening wins over Brown (11-10 on Saturday) and Harvard (7-4 on Sunday). In both cases NU -- a second-year varsity program -- avenged losses from a year ago.
Flynn scored five goals in the season opener against Brown, capping her day by notching the game-winner with 5:55 to play which snapped a 10-10 tie. On Sunday, she scored two more goals to help NU to the victory over the Crimson.
Flynn has taken over the leadership role on attack, filling in for Sarah Albrecht who led NU in scoring last year. Albrecht will miss this season after injuring her ACL during the preseason.
Leigh Ann Zimmer of Syracuse was named IL's National Player of the Week; she scored three goals as the Orangewomen downed Virgnia for the second year in a row.
In addition to Flynn's individual note, Inside Lacrosse placed Northwestern 20th on its national Power Poll. It is the first time the second-year 'Cats have been mentioned in this section by the publication.
