DOTHAN, Ala. - Northwestern's bid to sweep the weekend three-game set at the Troy State Wiregrass Classic fell a little short Sunday, as NU lost, 4-3, to Kansas State. NU led for most of the contest and went into the bottom of the ninth tied (3-3), but KSU's Pat Maloney, who struck out three times on the day, knocked a sharp single to left, plating Brad Anzman for the win. The loss dropped NU to 6-2 overall.

Dan Pohlman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) got the nod and responded, pitching six innings and allowing just six hits and one run. He also picked up five strikeouts.

Freshman Mark Ori (Niles, Ill./Maine South) came on in middle relief, retiring a pair of Wildcat batters. Jon Mikrut (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel), going for his third save, took the loss. Mikrut also went 3-for-4 on the day, and Eric Roeder (Onsted, Mich./Onsted) went 2-for-4 with one RBI.

NU took a 2-1 lead in the second inning and neither team scored again until the bottom of the eighth, when Kansas State (5-2) took a brief 3-2 lead. Brian Patty, pinch running for Ty Soto who had reached on a fielder's choice, and Ryan Baldwin, who had singled to left, both came across on a Zack Saunders double.

NU tied the game in the top of the ninth before K-State scored the gamewinner.

Northwestern is back in action March 7-9 in Albuquerque, New Mexico where it will face New Mexico, New Mexico State and Texas-Arlington.
