EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern University has announced its recipients of the Hilton Garden Inn Athlete of the Week awards for the week of Feb. 17-23. The men's winner is baseball's Ken Padgett (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe), while the women's recipient is fencing's Lauren Dunn (Sacramento, Calif./Del Campo) .
Padgett went 8-for-11 last weekend as Northwestern went 2-1 at the South Alabama Coca-Cola Classic. After going hitless in his first two games, Padgett batted .727, scored six runs, cranked three doubles and one home run, to go along with five RBI as the 'Cats improved to 4-1 overall. He also posted an eye-popping 1.273 slugging percentage.
Padgett turned in his most impressive performance of the weekend Sunday against St. John's. He went 3-for-4, hitting a double and a two-run homer to spark NU to an 18-12 win. The senior catcher also tallied four RBI on the day and 11 putouts from behind the plate. He is batting a team-best .500 (8-for-16) on the season. Padgett also threw out two runners attempting to steal.
Dunn went 12-0 last weekend, leading Northwestern to a 4-0 record at the Midwest Duals in East Lansing, Mich. Dunn improved to 36-2 in Midwest Collegiate Conference competition, by far the best conference mark on the team.
The sophomore sabreist reeled off 20 consecutive Midwest wins to start the season. Her 131 career wins rank fourth on NU's career sabre wins list. Dunn, who is 59-16 overall, helped lead the sabre squad to 30-3 regular season record.
