RIO MAR, P.R. -- After the first 18 holes at the NCAA Puerto Rico Classic, 13th-ranked Northwestern is 12 strokes behind leader North Carolina State. The field includes some of the nation's top programs, including defending national champion Minnesota and current No. 1 Clemson.

The Wildcats were led by Bjorn Widerstedt (Vasteras, Sweden), who shot a 1-over 73 in the opening round. He is tied for 10th place, along with the defending tournament champion, Troy Matteson of Georgia Tech.

Scott Harrington (Portland, Ore.) and Casey Strunk (Phoenix, Ariz.) each shot a 3-over 75 and are sitting in an 11-way tie for 24th place. Tom Johnson (Sacramento, Calif.), who leads NU in stroke average this season, is in 43rd place after shooting a 5-over 77. Bryson Young (Reno, Nev.) rounded out the Wildcat lineup with a 6-over 78.

Second-round play begins at 8 a.m. Monday, with the final round set for Tuesday.
