'Cats End Regular Season With 44-6 Loss to No. 2 Hawkeyes

Feb. 23, 2003

EVANSTON, Ill. - Senior Jason Erwinski (Tinley Park, Ill./Mt. Carmel) made good on his final appearance at Welsh-Ryan Arena, pinning second-ranked Iowa's Jason D'Agata in 3:43, but the Hawkeyes prevailed 44-6 Sunday on Senior Day. With the loss, NU fell to 5-12 overall and 0-8 in the Big Ten.

Erwinski wasted little time gaining control of his match at 165 pounds, scoring a two-point takedown just 10 seconds into the first period. He built his lead to 12-1 with three near falls before pinning D'Agata in the second frame. Erwinski improved his record to 20-12 on the year, including 5-3 in conference competition.

The 'Cats could not manage another point, though. Iowa jumped out to a 24-0 lead before Erwinski's win, scoring three wins by fall. The Hawkeyes tallied five falls on the afternoon.

Senior John Giacche (Flemington, N.J./Blair Academy) fell victim to Luke Moffitt at 141 pounds. Giacche dropped to 19-15 in 2003.

Northwestern is off for two weeks until the start of the Big Ten Championships. The conference tourney is set for March 8-9 in Madison, Wis., hosted by the University of Wisconsin.
