EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern wraps up the regular season Saturday at the Midwest Duals in East Lansing, Mich. NU, which fielded representatives at last weekend's USFA Junior Olympics, returns to dual action against Detroit, Michigan, Michigan State and Wayne State. Action is set to begin at 9 a.m.
NU met both Detroit and Wayne State earlier this season at the Notre Dame Duals, and the Wildcats prevailed both times. Northwestern defeated Detroit, 23-4, and knocked off Wayne State, 18-9, its 15th consecutive win against WSU.
Sophomore sabreist Lauren Dunn (Sacramento, Calif./Del Campo) is a team-best 24-2 against Midwest opponents thus far. The sabre squad, which owns NU's best record at 26-3, is 78-15 in overall bouts. Classmate Julia Foldi (Budapest, Hungary/Szent Istavan Gimnazium), NU's top foilist, has the most conference wins with 25.
Though NU has yet to face either of the schools from Michigan, it knows a thing or two about fencing against them. The Wildcats are 24-1 against the Wolverines and 16-0 against the Spartans.
Northwestern went 4-0 against the same four teams at last season's Wayne State Duals, also one weekend prior to the Midwest Collegiate Conference Championships.
After opening the day against Michigan State, Northwestern will fence Wayne State, Michigan and Detroit thereafter.
