EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern remained perfect against city rival DePaul, sweeping the Blue Demons, 7-0, Thursday at Combe Tennis Center. NU, which improved to 14-0 against DePaul, upped its season mark to 6-2.
NU head coach Paul Torricelli shuffled the lineup, and NU did not miss a beat. Jackie Jenkins (College Park, Ga./Westlake) made his first start at No. 1 singles and ousted the Blue Demons' Andy Michael, 7-5, 6-1. Russell Bennett (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) and Justin Hoeveler (Ross, Calif./The Branson School) also earned straight-set wins. Bennett defeated Will Wang, 6-0, 6-2, and Hoeveler upended Michael Fessler, 6-3, 6-0.
Josh Axler (Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) and freshman Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine), who made the jump to the No. 3 spot, won in three sets. The two also paired up at No. 2 doubles for an 8-5 win against Wang and Michael, improving to 11-6 on the season.
Jenkins and Chuck Perrin (Atlanta, Ga./The Walker School) racked up their 10th doubles win together, dropping Sam Davidson and Robert Kotrozco, 8-4.
Sophomore Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) got the day off and classmate Perrin sat out singles action.
Northwestern returns to action Saturday at Notre Dame. Match time is set for 1 p.m. in South Bend, Ind.
