EVANSTON, Ill. - Spend a little time with the members of the Northwestern women's lacrosse team, and it quickly becomes apparent that they have lofty ambitions for the upcoming season.
After their play at the South of the Border Tournament -- hosted by Duke and North Carolina -- it is easy to see why.
The Wildcats went a perfect 4-0, playing three half-games and one full game. Perhaps more impressively, NU knocked off the preseason No. 2 team in the country (Duke) in a half game and the No. 10 team (North Carolina) in a full game.
"We are very excited," said head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller. "We came out and got the jitters out in our first game, and after that the women seemed to gain confidence with each game."
Northwestern led off with a 3-0 victory over Denver in a half-game, getting goals from sophomore Courtney Flynn and freshmen Lynda McCandlish and Laura Glassanos. The Wildcats then knocked off Duke 4-2 as the same trio struck once apiece along with freshman Lindsey Munday.
Northwestern's third game was a half-game against Villanova, and NU won the battle of Wildcats 6-2. Freshman Kacee Must led the charge with three goals, while Flynn, Glassanos and freshman Sarah Fixler had one each.
The 'Cats finished the day with a full game against the Tar Heels, and emerged victorious 9-3. McCandlish and Glassanso had two goals apiece, while Flynn had a goal and two assists. Munday, Jenny Bush, Courtney Koester and Angela McMahon also scored.
"We got a number of contributions from so many people, at both ends of the field," said Amonte Hiller. "This really makes us excited for the regular season to start."
Northwestern open its season March 1-2 in New England. The Wildcats will take on Brown March 1 at 1 p.m. EST in Providence, then travel up I-95 to Boston to play Harvard on March 2 at noon EST.
