EVANSTON, Ill. - Five Northwestern fencers will get some extra bouts under their belts this weekend at the United States Fencing Association Junior Olympics. The event will be held from Friday until Monday in Colorado Springs, Colo.
NU's foilists get underway Friday at 1 p.m. The sabreists follow suit Saturday at 8 a.m., while the ep?e squad wraps up the trip Monday at 8 a.m.
Among the competitors on the travel squad are freshmen Sharon Sullivan (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) and Christina Wang (Milpitas, Calif./Castilleja). Sullivan has the second most wins on the team with a 55-14 record, and Wang has the third most with a 54-14 mark. Sullivan also ranks 15th in the ep?e junior national point standings, while Wang is 31st among junior foilists.
Coming off an impressive freshman campaign, second-year sabreist Lauren Van Gieson (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) is also in the mix. Van Gieson, ranked 34th in the junior national point standings, is 50-19.
Ep?eist Kelsey Nencheck (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) and sabreist Emily Pasternak (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) are also slated to make the trip.
Northwestern, the eighth-ranked team in the country, concludes the regular season Feb. 22 at the Midwest Duals.
