Wildcats Capture Rice Intercollegiate Championship; Scott Harrington Takes Individual Title

Feb. 11, 2003

CYPRESS, Texas -- At the Rice Intercollegiate, senior Scott Harrington (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) sank an 8-foot birdie putt on the final hole to win his first college tournament Tuesday afternoon and help 14th-ranked Northwestern claim its second tournament title of the year. The tournament was played at the par-72, 7,075-yard BlackHorse North Course Golf Club.

Harrington, who carried a two-stroke lead into the final round, birdied the par-4 17 to remain two strokes in front of Missouri's Chris Happ, his final-round playing partner. Happ, however, eagled the par-5 18 to tie Harrington. Harrington came back to drain the birdie putt for the win.

"It was a thrilling finish for Scott and the team," said head coach Pat Goss. "He had a great tournament." Harrington's previous best finish was a second-place showing at last year's Big Ten Championships.

The Wildcats won the tournament title by 18 strokes, posting a 6-over 294 in the final round. North Texas and Missouri finished second and third, respectively.

Tom Johnson (Sacramento, Calif./Del Campo) placed third with an even-par 216 (70-74-72). Bjorn Widerstedt (Vasteras, Sweden/Carlforsska Gymnasiet) and Casey Strunk (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird) placed 12th and 15th, respectively. Dillon Dougherty (Woodland, Calif./Woodland) fired a 1-over 73 on Tuesday to move into 31st place.

Bryson Young (Reno, Nev./Galena), playing in his first collegiate tournament for the 'Cats, was competing as an individual-only and finished ninth at 4-over (72-71-77).

"We played an excellent second round," said Goss. "We took advantage of the perfect weather conditions and that catapulted us into a comfortable lead.

"Our guys made some progress this winter, but still have plenty of work to do as the tournaments and golf courses get tougher in the coming weeks. This is a good start to our spring."

Northwestern is next in action Feb. 23-25 at the NCAA Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Mar, P.R.
