MADISON - Northwestern rebounded from a first round loss to USC on Thursday, and handily defeated Wake Forest Friday afternoon in consolation play at the United States Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Team Indoor Championships. The Wildcats won the doubles point and five of the six singles matches for the 6-1 victory.
Northwestern improves to 5-4 on the season, while Wake Forest falls to 1-3.
After knocking off the ninth-best doubles team in the country-as ranked by the ITA-on Thursday, Northwestern's duo of Cristelle Grier and Jessica Rush picked up another win today at No. 1. Grier and Rush defeated Karin Coetzee and Aimee Smith, 8-3. Jamie Peisel and Kristi Roemer clinched the doubles point with an 8-2 win over Wake's Elizabeth Proctor and Alexandra Knight at No. 3.
It was smooth sailing for the rest of the match, as Northwestern won five of the six singles matches in straight sets. No. 16 Grier was the 6-2, 6-1 victor at No. 1, increasing her dual match record to 9-0 on the season. No. 63 Rush easily defeated No. 70 Danielle Schwartz, 6-0, 6-1. Andrea Yung, NU's only other singles winner Thursday, was the 6-0, 6-1 winner at No. 3 over Katie Martzolf. Peisel's 6-0, 6-0 win over Proctor at No. 4 clinched the match for the Wildcats. Stacy Kokx was the 6-1, 6-3 winner over Knight at No. 6.
Northwestern will continue consolation play Saturday at 9 a.m. when they meet No. 11 Tennessee. The Volunteers lead the series record, 3-1.
