Northwestern Wins Two of Four in Day One of Notre Dame Duals

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Northwestern, the seventh-ranked team in the country, went 2-2 in the first day of the Notre Dame Duals on Saturday. With the wins, NU improved to 18-5 in 2003. The Wildcats' two losses came against the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the nation, Penn State and Notre Dame.

NU opened the day against Air Force with an 18-9 win. Northwestern then met top-ranked Penn State but lost 17-10. NU's sabre squad was dealt only its second loss of the year, as PSU held on for a 5-4 win.

Northwestern dropped Cal State-Fullerton 20-7, setting the stage for a showdown with second-ranked Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish prevailed 19-8, but the 'Cats' sabreists earned a 5-4 win, improving to 21-2 in 2003 and increasing their chances of getting the No. 1 seed in the Midwest Collegiate Conference tournament.

Northwestern wraps up the Notre Dame Duals on Sunday against Detroit, Cal-San Diego and Wayne State.
