Northwestern Defeats Gardner-Webb, Falls to Purdue, Pittsburgh at Wendy's Duals

ASHLAND, Ohio - Northwestern won its first match 34-9 against Gardner-Webb, but dropped its last two to Purdue and Pittsburgh on Sunday at the Wendy's Duals. The 'Cats fell to the Boilermakers 27-12 and lost to the Panthers 29-6. NU is 5-3 on the season.

Northwestern trounced Gardner-Webb, winning eight of the ten matches. John Giacche (Flemington, N.J./Blair Academy) and Tommy Vargas (Highland, Calif./Pacific) each scored wins by technical fall in the dual.

Giacche and Vargas eached posted another win against Purdue, and sophomore Mike Kimberlin (Bradley, Ill./Bishop McNamara) tied the contest with a win at 157 pounds. However, Purdue won four of the last five matches for the win.

Kimberlin was the only Wildcat wrestler to go undefeated on the day, running his record to 22-8. He has won six consecutive matches.

Northwestern returns to action Friday, Jan. 17 against Northern Illinois. Action is scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m. at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
