Northwestern Wins Two of Three in Day One of NU Duals

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern may have had more than a month off, but it didn't take long for head coach Laurie Schiller's team to get back in the swing of things. NU defeated Lawrence 26-1 and followed that up with a 19-8 win against Johns Hopkins on Saturday at the NU Duals. Northwestern dropped its final match of the day to rival Temple. The Wildcats are 8-2 on the season.

Freshman Sharon Sullivan (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) led the 'Cats with a perfect 9-0 mark on the day. Sullivan, an ep?eist, is now a team-best 26-2. Julia F?ldi (Budapest, Hungary/Szent Istavan Gimnazium), NU's top foilist, went 8-0.

The scenario was all too similar for Northwestern regarding Saturday's dual against Temple. The Wildcats won their first won their first two matches in last year's NU Duals-against Lawrence and Johns Hopkins-and then lost 14-13 to the Owls. The 'Cats fell to the Owls by the exact same score this time around.

Sophomore sabreist Lauren Van Gieson (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) posted a 6-3 mark. Her six wins Saturday moved her into sixth place on NU's career sabre wins list with 73. Classmate Lauren Dunn (Sacramento, Calif./Del Campo) is fifth with 92 career wins.

Northwestern wraps up the NU Duals on Sunday against Cleveland State, North Carolina and Fairleigh Dickinson. Action gets underway at 11 a.m. at Patten Gymnasium.
