EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern finished day one of the 40th Midlands Championships with 17.5 points, good for 24th place. The Wildcats, who placed 41st in the 2001 tournament, have already scored 10 more points than last season and are tied with Oregon State.
John Giacche (Flemington, N.J./Blair Academy) continued his strong performance, winning three of his four matches on the day. Giacche went 1-1 in the championship bracket and has since won two straight in the consolation, including a pin against Jared Walaters of Lassen College. Giacche will place if he wins two matches Sunday.
John Velez (Kings Mills, Ohio/Kings) had a solid day at 125 pounds, winning two of his four matches. Freshman Matt Delguyd (Mayfield, Ohio/Mayfield) went 1-2 at 197 pounds.
Jason Erwinski (Tinley Park, Ill./Mt. Carmel) fell to the No. 5 seed Brian Glynn of Illinois in the first round of the 174-pound championship bracket, and he was knocked out for good in his next match.
Defending champion Iowa is on top of the leaderboard with 74.5 points. Sunkist Kids has 64 points, Ohio State has 63 points, Illinois has 49.5 points and Penn State and Michigan have 45 points apiece to round out the top five.
The third session is slated to begin at noon at Welsh-Ryan Arena, followed by the fourth session at 7 p.m.
