EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern University has named its Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for the week of Nov. 24-Dec. 1. Basketball player Jitim Young (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) is this week's men's recipient, while fellow cager Sarah Kwasinski (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) is the female representative.
Young, a junior guard, had three big games for the men's basketball team, which went 2-1 on the week. First he scored 29 points-the best scoring night by a Wildcat player in four seasons-as NU defeated New Hampshire.
He followed that up by leading Northwestern in scoring against IUPUI with 16 points, and then punctuated the week with 12 points in a 59-55 win at Kansas State. He came up with five consecutive points against KSU that snapped a 40-40 tie and gave the 'Cats a lead they never relinquished.
Sarah Kwasinski, a sophomore center, averaged 18 points and 6.5 rebounds per game as the women's basketball team went 1-1 at the Rutgers Coca-Cola Classic in Piscataway, N.J. Against Richmond, Kwasinski had a game-high 22 points and nine rebounds.
In the championship game versus Rutgers, she chipped in 14 points and a team-high six rebounds. Kwasinski was a combined 13-for-24 from the field and 10-for-12 from the free throw line. In all, she blocked three shots while averaging 36.5 minutes per game. For her efforts, Kwasinski was named to the Coca-Cola All-Classic team.
