Swim and Dive Teams Compete at Day 2 of NU Invite

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern's women's swimming and diving team continues to hold solid control of first place after the second day of competiton at the NU Invitational. The Wildcats have 696 team points, while Illinois is second with 591.50. Southern Illinois is third with 458.50 and Southern Methodist is fourth with 67 points.

On the men's side, Northwestern is in third place, but is only 26 points behind leader Southern Illinois. Southern Methodist is 10 points behind the leading Salukis with 625 points.

NU's women won seven of the eight events Saturday. First-place finishes came from Erika Rose in the 400 IM (4:24.76), Carmen Cosgrove in the 100 butterfly (56.15), Vicky West in the 200 freestyle (1:52.97), Brielle Bovee in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.13), Katie Paglini in the 100 backstroke (56.57) and the 800 free relay team of West, Paglini, Lesley Meade and Sara Petric (7:34.74). Ashley Carter also won the 1-meter diving competition with a score of 267.95.

The Wildcat men won four events on the day, including two by Kellan O'Connor. O'Connor won the 400 IM in a time of 3:57.48, in addition to taking the title in 100 butterfly in 48.86. NU also got first from Louis Torres in the 100 breaststroke (56.63) and the 800 free relay team of O'Connor, Tony Swanson, Mark Hamming and Dan Williams.

The teams will wrap up action at the NU Invite tomorrow. Preliminaries begin at 9 a.m. and finals get underway at 3 p.m.
