Northwestern Signs Two During Early Period

Nov. 20, 2002

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern men's tennis head coach Paul Torricelli announced the signing of Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) and Jamie Friedland (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen's Academy). Christian and Friedland are the two Wildcat signees for the early period.

Christian, the class valedictorian of his high school, is currently ranked in the top 100 of the Boy's 18's rankings. He won the Boy's 16's Winter Supernationals in Tuscon, Ariz. last December. Christian was coached by former NU All-American Steve Herdoiza.

"Matt will be a terrific addition for us," Torricelli said. "He's an aggressive baseliner who looks to attack. He is an excellent athlete and he'll contribute in both singles and doubles right away."

Friedland currently has a USTA Boy's 18's ranking of No. 52. He won the backdraw at the USTA Copper Bowl last January.

"Jamie has taken a huge jump in the last year," Torricelli said. "His game is built on groundstrokes and an improving attacking game. Jamie is an intense competitor, which makes him ideal for college tennis."
