DALLAS, Texas - Senior Marine Piriou and freshman Chrsitelle Grier got off to a good start at the Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships Thursday in Dallas. The duo are representing the Wildcat women's tennis team at the prestigious fall-season tournament.
The tournament, which is hosted by Southern Methodist University, began this morning and continues through Sunday at Brookhaven Country Club.
Piriou -- last year's Big Ten Player of the Year -- knocked off Stanford's Amber Liu in three sets Thursday morning (7-5, 5-7, 6-2). Grier, meanwhile, undoubtedly pulled off the biggest upset of the day with a straight-set win over second-seeded Vlimarie Castellvi from Tennessee (6-4, 6-3).
Piriou will meet Florida's Lindsay Dawaf, the tourney's seventh seed, in Friday morning's second round. Grier will also square off with a Gator, taking on Alexis Gordon. Dawaf played No. 2 and Gordon was No. 4 last year for Florida, which knocked off Northwestern in the Round of 16 at the NCAA Championships.
