EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern's women's swimming and diving team captured titles in all 11 events as it defended its home pool in winning the 2002 NU Relays on Sunday at the Norris Aquatics Center. The Wildcats' 220 team points easily outdistanced second-place Toledo, which totaled 187 points. UW-Milwaukee (155) finished third, while Louisville (147.50) placed fourth and Illinois-Chicago (133.50) took fifth.
Meanwhile, the Northwestern men also finished first, winning six of the 11 events to narrowly edge out Toledo for the title. The 'Cats finished with 205 points, compared to 202 for the Rockets. Louisville (157) placed third, followed by UW-Milwaukee (156) and Illinois-Chicago (123).
On the women's side, Carmen Cosgrove (Perth, Austrailia), Erin Swenson (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central), Paige Nath (Wichita, Kan./Trinity Academy) and Katie Paglini (Chicago, Ill./Latin School) were each members of five winning relay teams. In all, 13 team members were a part of at least one winning event.
The Wildcat men were led by Kellan O'Connor (Phoenix, Ariz./Brophy Preparatory), who was a member of five of NU's six winning teams. Tony Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids), Mark Hamming (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and Louis Torres (Morton Grove, Ill./Niles West) each were a part of three winning relays.
Northwestern held a six-point lead over Toledo heading into the final event of the meet, the 400 freestyle relay. Toledo won the event, but the 'Cats finished second to hold off the Rockets for the title.
Both the men and women will return to action at 6 p.m. on Nov. 8 when they travel to West Lafayette, Ind. for a three-team dual with Purdue and Pittsburgh.
