EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's men's golf team, ranked fifth in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, will wrap up its fall season this weekend at the 2002 Nelson Invitational in Stanford, Calif. Head Coach Pat Goss' squad will play 54 holes over three days at the Stanford Golf Course (par 71, 6,786 yards). Play begins with 18 holes Friday, to be followed by rounds of 18 both Saturday and Sunday.
NU is coming off consecutive strong showings, winning its own Windon Memorial Classic Sept. 30-Oct. 1, and finishing second at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational Oct. 14-15 in Fairfax, Calif.
Junior Tom Johnson (Sacramento, Calif./Del Campo) continues to lead the 'Cats. Johnson's individual Golfweek ranking is up to second nationally, after an 8-under 205 at the MacKenzie. Johnson rode a career-low second round 65 to a runner-up individual finish.
Senior Scott Harrington (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) is also playing well, finishing ninth at the MacKenzie with a 3-under 210. Harrington sits 31st in the individual national rankings, while fellow senior Bjorn Widerstedt (Vasteras, Sweden) ranks 88th.
The Nelson frequently attracts top golf programs from across the country. The 2002 field includes No. 23 Toledo, No. 26 Duke, No. 36 Missouri, and defending champion Washington (No. 38) among its 18 teams.
