13th-Ranked Wildcats Place Second at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational

Oct. 15, 2002

FAIRFAX, Calif. -- Led by Tom Johnson's (Weaverville, Calif./Del Campo) second-place finish, Northwestern's 13th-ranked men's golf team made a strong run for its second-straight tournament title at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational. The Wildcats came up three strokes short, however, and finished in a second-place tie at 8-under (281-274-289=844) with eighth-ranked UCLA. The inaugural tournament was hosted by the University of California.

Northwestern, which turned in the best team score for the final two rounds, won its own Windon Memorial Classic title earlier this month. Fresno State won the Alister MacKenzie Invitational with an 11-under 841.

Johnson, who has moved up to the No. 3 ranking in this week's Golfweek/Sagarin index, fired a career-best 65 in the second round to move into title contention. The Wildcats were one of the few teams who were able to finish their second round on Monday. Johnson, finishing three strokes off the lead, shot a 1-over 72 on Tuesday to finish 8-under.

Scott Harrington (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) placed ninth, shooting a 3-under 210 (70-68-72) for the three rounds, while classmate Bjorn Widerstedt (Vasteras, Sweden) bounced back from a 4-over 75 in the first round to finish 19th with a 2-over 215 (75-72-68). Harrington and Widerstedt are ranked 55th and 88th, respectively, in the latest Golfweek index.

Sophomore Dillon Dougherty (Woodland, Calif./Woodland) and junior T.C. Ford (Covington, La./Mandeville) finished a respective 43rd and 49th.

Northwestern returns to northern California next weekend (Oct. 25-27), taking part in the The Nelson, a prestigious tournament hosted by Stanford. That event will close out the Wildcats' fall schedule.
