Evanston, Ill. - On the heels of its first tournament victory since May 2001, the Northwestern men's golf team will travel to northern California Oct. 14-15 for the Alister MacKenzie Invitational. The 54-hole event, hosted by the University of California, will be held at the Meadow Club in Fairfax, Calif.
NU, ranked No. 10 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin ratings, is coming off a win at the Windon Memorial Classic Sept. 30-Oct. 1 at the Glen View Club in Golf, Ill. The Windon championship marked the 16th tournament victory for seventh-year head coach Pat Goss.
Junior Tom Johnson (Weaverville, Calif./Del Campo) leads the 'Cats into the MacKenzie Invitational, after capturing the individual title at the Windon. Johnson set tournament records with a final round 66 and a three-round total of 206 on the way to his first medalist performance. He currently sits fifth in the Golfweek individual rankings.
Seniors Scott Harrington (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) and Bjorn Widerstedt (Vasteras, Sweden) have also cracked the top-100 rankings. Harrington is currently 49th, with Widerstedt checking in at 78th.
The MacKenzie Invitational features an elite field including six teams in the top 50 nationally. No. 5 UCLA heads the group, with fellow Pac-10 teams Cal (No. 32), Stanford (No. 39) and Oregon State (No. 45) also participating in the 17-team event.
The golfers will play 36 holes at the Meadow Club on Monday, Oct. 14, with the final 18 holes to be played Tuesday, Oct. 15. The 6,585-yard, par-71 course was designed by MacKenzie in 1927. MacKenzie also served as the original architect for Augusta National, site of the Masters, and Cypress Point in Pebble Beach, Calif.
