EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern named its Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week. The male recipient is Doug Szymul of the football team and the female recipient is Nicole Kuznia of the cross country team. The awards were based on athletic competition from September 9-15.
Making his second collegiate start, junior linebacker Doug Szymul (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West) turned in a career-best performance with 15 tackles (eight solos), a fumble recovery and an interception in NU's 26-21 win over Duke. Both of his takeaways came in the second half when the Wildcats prevented the Blue Devils from scoring on their final seven possessions.
Senior Nicole Kuznia (Olivia, Minn./BOLD) set the pace for the Wildcats and the rest of the field at Saturday's Illinois State Invitational in Normal, Ill. She was clocked at 22:38.46 over the 6-kilometer ISU Farm Course to best 81 others for her first collegiate individual title. Led by her victory, Northwestern defeated six other squads for the team title in its first 2002 meet.
