Evanston, Ill. - Northwestern senior offensive lineman Jeff Roehl (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) has accepted an offer to play in the prestigious East-West Shrine Game, set for Jan. 11, 2003 in San Francisco's Pacific Bell Park.
Roehl is scheduled to play for the East squad, coached by Notre Dame's Tyrone Willingham, at the 78th annual all-star game. He is the second Big Ten player to join the East roster, following Illinois wide receiver Walter Young.
Since becoming eligible to play at NU prior to the 2000 season, Roehl has started all 23 games at offensive guard for the 'Cats, earning honorable mention All-Big Ten status following both the 2000 and 2001 seasons. Heading into the 2002 season, the Outland Trophy and All-America candidate was named to the preseason All-Big Ten first team by The Sporting News and Football News.
Roehl will be the 75th NU player to suit up for the Shrine Game, and the first since Eric Collier and KeJuan DuBose played in 1997. NU ranks fourth among Big Ten schools and 14th overall in all-time Shrine Game participants.
