Tory Lindley Named Director of Sports Medicine at Northwestern

July 11, 2002

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Tory Lindley, the head athletic trainer and director of sports medicine at Eastern Michigan University the past two years, has been named Northwestern's director of sports medicine. He replaces Tory Aggeler, who is returning to his native state of Colorado to enter private business.

At Eastern Michigan, Lindley served as the staff athletic trainer for football, as well as a clinical supervisor and lecturer in the accredited athletic training curriculum. Prior to his two-year stint at EMU, he spent four years as a staff athletic trainer at Michigan State (1996-2000), his alma mater. Lindley earned a bachelor of science in education with a specialization in athletic training from MSU in 1991.

Two years after earning his undergraduate degree, Lindley received a master of arts in kinesiology with an emphasis in biomechanics from the University of Minnesota. During his undergraduate and postgraduate years, he earned football athletic training experience in the NFL, serving as an intern with the Washington Redskins in 1989 and the New York Giants in 1990. In 1992-93, he served as an assistant athletic trainer for the Houston Oilers.

At Northwestern, Lindley will supervise the Wildcats' athletic training staff, interns and students, and work primarily with football.

"We're pleased to have Tory lead our sports medicine staff," said Rick Taylor, NU's director of athletics. "He has extensive experience in athletic training and a good background with football and the Big Ten. We will miss Tory Aggeler a great deal, but believe that Tory Lindley can provide strong expertise and leadership."

A published author in the Journal of Athletic Training, Athletic Therapy Today and Rehab Management, Lindley is the chair of the National Athletic Trainers Association Multimedia Committee and a member of the NATA's Education Council Executive Committee. Before he joined the Spartan staff in 1996, the Suttons Bay, Mich., native served as the head athletic trainer at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn. (1993-96).

"It's an honor to be back in the Big Ten and lead such a strong sports medicine program as Northwestern," said Lindley. "Under Tory Aggeler, Northwestern has deservedly earned the reputation of having one of the country's top programs. It will be a challenge to follow Tory, but Northwestern has an accomplished staff of athletic trainers and physicians already in place, and it's a privilege to join them."

Lindley and his wife, Bethann, have three children: Jonah (7), Evan (3) and Genevieve (2).
