Meggan Kohnen Named Assistant Coach

June 18, 2002

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern volleyball coach Keylor Chan has hired Meggan Kohnen as an assistant coach. Kohnen joins Josh Grau on Chan's staff.

Kohnen is no stranger to the Big Ten volleyball circuit. After beginning her college career at Texas, where Grau was then an assistant, she starred as a middle blocker at Wisconsin during the 2000 season. Kohnen helped lead the Badgers to the 2000 NCAA Tournament championship match.

"We're thrilled to add Meggan to our staff," said Chan. "She's a proven player, and will undoubtedly be a great asset to our program on the court and off the court. Her enthusiasm and experience as a player will help us get to the next level."

Kohnen graduated from Wisconsin in December, 2001 with a B.S. in biology. Since then, she has been coaching with the Westerville (Ohio) Volleyball Club and studying acupuncture.

During her college career, Kohnen posted impressive individual statistics. Combining her numbers from Texas and Wisconsin, she played in 124 matches, starting 108. She registered 839 career kills (2.10 per game), and twice posted 100-block seasons, finishing her career with 385 (27 solo). In 2000, she was named to the all-tournament team at the Sugar Bowl Classic.

Kohnen also brings a wealth of championship experience to the 'Cats. In addition to the 2000 NCAA Tournament run with Wisconsin, she was also part of a Big 12 championship squad at Texas, and won two state championships at Dubuque (Iowa) High School.

A superior student, Kohnen earned a pair of district Academic All-America awards while at Texas. She was named Academic All-Big 12 in 1998 and 1999, and Academic All-Big Ten in 2000.
