COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Rain suspended play for approximately 90 minutes Thursday afternoon at the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships, but it did not prevent play from being completed as it did Wednesday.
On Thursday, Northwestern's Tom Johnson (Fair Oaks, Calif./Del Campo) was in the morning wave of golfers and completed his second round before the rain hit. Johnson, along with approximately half the field, was forced to hit the course early this morning to finish the first round, which was suspended due to rain on Wednesday afternoon.
Johnson completed his first 18 holes with a 1-over-par 72. He started today's second round on a strong note, shooting even par for the first nine holes (the back nine). Johnson suffered four bogeys on his last nine holes, however, dropping him into the second half of the tourney's individual race. He is now tied for 106th place.
Johnson is scheduled to tee off at 1 p.m. (EDT) Friday. The final round will be played Saturday.
Clemson and Georgia Tech are the leaders after two rounds. Clemson shot a 7-under par 277 Thursday to take the team lead.
Teams were sent to shelters on The Ohio State University Scarlet Course at 3:39 p.m. CDT Thursday when thunder and rain halted play. Play resumed at 5:25 p.m. and finished at 9:05 p.m. Brock Mackenzie of Washington is the tournament leader at 7-under par (66-69).
