Wildcats in 15th Place at NCAA Central Regional

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- After day one of the NCAA Central Region Championships, Northwestern's men's golf team is sitting in a 15th-place tie (10-over 298) with Missouri. Northwestern teed off early this morning before concluding its round around 1 p.m.

The Wildcats' goal is to place among the top 10 teams when Saturday's third round concludes. A top-10 finish means a trip to the NCAA national championships in Columbus, Ohio later this month. Presently, the Wildcats are five strokes behind 10th-place Illinois.

Sophomore Tom Johnson (Fair Oaks, Calif./Del Campo) led NU, shooting an even-par 72. He is tied for 24th overall. Johnson birdied five of his 18 holes. Junior Bjorn Widerstedt (Vasteras, Sweden) is 1-over par and tied for 33rd.

Junior Scott Harrington (Portland, Ore./Jesuit), who has finished second in two of NU's last three tournaments, shot a 2-over 74 and is tied for 43rd place. He birdied three of his last seven holes, which helped overcome a slow start.

Northwestern, which is seeded 20th in the Championships, tees off between 11:51 a.m. and 12:27 p.m. on Friday.
