EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern women's tennis team proved that three could be a magic number Sunday afternoon, defeating Wisconsin 4-0 in the second round of the NCAA Championships at the Combe Tennis Center.
The Wildcats have now defeated the Badgers three times since April 13 -- once in the regular season, once in the Big Ten Tournament championship match, and once in the NCAA Championships.
Northwestern moves on to the Round of 16 in Palo Alto, Calif., where the 16th-seeded 'Cats will meet top-seeded Florida Thursday at 5 p.m. (7 p.m. CT). The Gators defeated Miami (Fla.), 4-0, in a second-round match in Gainesville, Fla. earlier today.
Northwestern got off to a fast start on its Big Ten foe Sunday afternoon, wrapping up the doubles point with wins at No. 3 and No. 1. The Wildcats' No. 3 duo of Ruth Barnes and Andrea Yung won first, 8-3 over UW's Katie McGaffigan and Lindsay Martin. Lia Jackson and Simona Petrutiu then clinched the initial point with an 8-3 win at No. 1 over UW's Linde Mues and Lara Vojnov.
Singles proved to be much of the same, as NU motored out quickly in several of the matches and never let the Badgers back in.
Jackson got Northwestern's second point with a straight-set win over Mues (6-2, 6-0) at No. 2, and Marine Piriou added the third point soon afterward with a straight-set win of her own against Wisconsin's Vanessa Rauh (6-0, 6-3) at No. 1.
Ruth Barnes clinched the victory for the 'Cats at No. 6 singles, coming back from a 4-2 deficit in the second set to down Martin (6-3, 7-5).
The No. 3 (Jessica Rush vs. Shana McElroy), No. 4 (Petrutiu vs. McGaffigan) and No. 5 (Yung vs. Katie Dougherty) matches were abandoned at that time.
