Fencing Signs One Each to Foil, Ep?e Squads

EVANSTON, Ill. - Head women's fencing coach Laurie Schiller has received National Letters of Intent for two fencers who will come on board for the 2002-03 season.

Sharon Sullivan (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) and Christina Wang (Milpitas, Calif./Castilleja) will join previous signee Emily Pasternak (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) in helping replace 10 graduating seniors on the team.

Sullivan, an ep?eist, is currently ranked No. 17 in junior women's ep?e by the United States Fencing Association. Active in the sport since middle school, she holds a USFA "B" classification. Sullivan took second in the Division II Summer Nationals in 2001, and also finished seventh in juniors at the 2001 Greenville, S.C., North America Cups event.

At Fairport, Sullivan also has been involved in the Spanish National Honor Society and the school yearbook. The daughter of Lin Silver and Mark Sullivan, she plans to major in the social sciences.

Wang, a foilist, is currently ranked No. 18 in junior women's foil by the USFA. She has fenced competitively at the Fencing Center of San Jose for the past five years under coach Connie Yu. At the 2001 Junior Olympics in Salt Lake City, Wang finished 12th in cadet and 32nd in juniors. She also finished second in the Division III 2000 Summer Nationals and in the 2000 California High School State Championship.

At the all-female Castilleja, Wang has been involved in student government, the school newspaper and has interned at the Stanford Children's Hospital. The daughter of Robert and Teresa Wang, she plans to enroll in a premedicine curriculum.
