Moving Indoors Not Enough To Help Men's Tennis Against No. 20 Ohio State

No. 20 Ohio State remains one of two men's tennis teams with an undefeated record in Big Ten conference action after defeating No. 42 Northwestern 6-1 Saturday afternoon at the Combe Tennis Center.

The match, originally scheduled to be played outside at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center, was moved indoors due to inclement weather.

The Wildcats fall to 12-8 overall and now have a 5-4 mark in conference play. The Buckeyes extend their win streak to 17 matches and garner their 20th victory of the season. They are 20-2, 9-0 in the Big Ten.

Senior Joost Hol (Newport Beach, Calif./Foothill) was the only Wildcat to pick up a point, defeating Conor Casey 7-6(4), 6-1 at the No. 4 singles spot.

In the No. 1 position, freshman Tommy Hanus was defeated by No. 26 Phil Metz, 6-3, 6-2. In a move away from the standard NU lineup, head coach Paul Torricelli pitted senior Jamie Sahara (Santa Maria, Calif./St. Joseph) against the 33rd-ranked player in the country, Jeremy Wurtzman, who won in three sets.

Torricelli credited Ohio State as being a tough opponent. "We had our hands full from the beginning," he said. "They have a very good chance of beating Illinois tomorrow."

The Wildcats have a chance to get back on track Sunday as they host Penn State (11-10, 3-5 Big Ten). The forecast for the Evanston area does not look like it will permit an outdoor match at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center, but that decision will come Sunday morning. Match time, regardless of venue, is scheduled for noon.
