MADISON, Wis. - Senior Joost Hol (Newport Beach, Calif./Foothill) won the deciding singles match as No. 39 Northwestern defeated No. 73 Wisconsin 4-3 in Madison Sunday.
Hol's match was the only one to go three sets, and he defeated Scott Green, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 for the final team point. The win snaps a three-match skid for the Wildcats (12-7, 5-3 Big Ten).
The Badgers took the doubles point, as only Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) and Russell Bennett (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) won a doubles match for NU, defeating Green and Scott Rutherford, 8-6.
In the singles round, No. 118 Hanus fell at the top spot to 28th-ranked Danny Westerman. After getting blanked in the first set, 6-0, Hanus pushed the second game to a tiebreaker and fell 7-6. The score from the tiebreaker set was not available.
After Ryan Edlefsen (Bloomington, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson) dropped at the No. 2 spot, teammates Jamie Sahara (Santa Maria, Calif./St. Joseph), Josh Axler (Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) and Chuck Perrin (Atlanta, Ga./The Walker School) picked up wins at the Nos. 3, 5 and 6 positions to tie the score at 3-3.
It was then that Hol, who played at the No. 4 spot for the first time this season over the weekend, won his match to secure the victory for the Wildcats.
NU returns home next weekend to finish out the Big Ten regular season against Ohio State and Penn State. Weather permitting, the matches will be played Saturday and Sunday outdoors at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center and will begin at noon.
