BROWNS SUMMIT, N.C. -- Senior Emily Gilley (Flossmoor, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) was one of three Northwestern players to fire a 1-over 73 in the third round of the Bryan National Collegiate tournament at the Bryan Park Champions Golf Club. Her performance, coupled with third-round 73's from Hana Kim (Encino, Calif./Brentwood) and Lauren Grzebien (Saunderstown, R.I./Narragansett), helped the Wildcats shoot a spring team-best 296 and finish ninth at the event.
Gilley, who shot a 7-over-par 223 for the three days, finished in a 12th-place tie, her best showing of the spring. Kim's 73 helped her climb 17 spots in the final day. She shot a sub-par 83 on Saturday, but her 1-over 73 gave her a 14-over 230 for the tournament. Grzebien also turned in a much-improved effort on Sunday. She shot an 87 on Saturday.
With the three 73's, the Wildcats jumped from 13th to a ninth-place tie with Purdue. NU finished a stroke behind N.C. State and two strokes behind North Carolina. Second-ranked Duke won the tournament for a second straight year.
The Wildcats, ranked 32nd in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin poll, take a 13-day break before returning to action Saturday, April 20 at the Lady Buckeye and Spring Invitational in Columbus, Ohio.
