TUCSON, Ariz. -- With winds gusting up to 35 miles per hour on Saturday at the U.S. Collegiate Championships, Northwestern's men's golf team was unable to overcome the tough conditions and the result was a 23-over-par 311. That score left the Wildcats in ninth place, just one stroke ahead of last place Kent State.
The tournament, hosted by the University of Arizona, is being held at the Tucson National Golf Club.
Sophomore Tom Johnson (Fair Oaks, Calif./Del Campo), who fired a career-best 67 in Friday's opening round, shot a 3-over-par 75 on Saturday and sits in seventh place with one round to play. He is 2-under-par for the tournament.
Senior Chris Thayer (Richmond, Va./Godwin) is tied for 36th after firing a 6-over-par 78 on Saturday.
Heading into the final 18 holes, Texas holds a nine-stroke lead over Oklahoma State and Arizona. The U of A Wildcats, who began the day a stroke behind Northwestern, shot a team-best 287 on Saturday to vault seven spots in the team standings.
